For some strange reason women always believe that their bodies are not quite right, rather than the clothes they choose are not quite right. The first thing you need to believe about yourself is that you are the way you are. In other words you need to find yourself those perfect gowns and dresses that cater to your unique proportions!
Have you ever tried an empire waist dress and have it cinch below your bust line uncomfortably? This could easily happen if you have a short waist. On the other hand if you have a long waist, the dress may fall funnily and rise too high above your knees and you may find yourself pulling at the hemline constantly. Have you noticed how some tops tend to make you look shorter or heavier while some just never seem to be long enough? The trick lies in understanding your proportions so you know what kind of dresses look perfect on you and which styles you should pick out for yourself.
As mentioned earlier – it is all about body proportions and how each part of your body relates to the other parts. You may lose or gain weight but in general you are going to retain the same body shape. Hence, it’s always best to pick out dresses that match your shape the best. Remember, you also need to consider other things which do not get covered under generalized body styles like a tummy, long arms, short waist, etc.
One of the most common problems most women face is either being long, short or balanced in their waist line. All you need to do is take a measuring tape and measure the area between the bottom of your rib cage and the top of your hip bone.
• Short-waisted—the space will be about 1-2 inches
• Average-waisted—the space will be about 2-3 inches
• Long-waisted—the space will be about 3-4 inches
The best way to conceal a short waist is to select a dress that tightens below the bust and flows on. This gives an impression of a long silhouette and a beautiful body. Women with long waist lines can emphasize their fantastic shape by adding accessories like a belt. Dual colored dresses also look great. A great idea would be to tuck your blouse into a formal skirt in a professional environment. This also gives off an implication of length.
Rule of thumb: When you have a body part that is short—look for long. When you have a body part that is long—look for short.
Shorter hemlines suit tall women. They can experiment with a short ruffled dress while women with a short waist line look better with length since it gives off an appearance of having more than you actually do. Your goal no matter your shape or proportional imbalances should be to 'appear balanced' through the clothes you wear.
So whether you select a cocktail gown or a gorgeous red carpet gown or your prom dress, remember to always dress up to suit your body.
