Vintage dresses are not only expensive they are also classic. Classic clothing if not stored properly or if it is stored for a very long time can wear and are not suitable for wearing. In this case do not throw away your dress, instead recreate it.
Pattern Study is a method used to restore your vintage dress which can be made form the same or replacement materials from the scratch; you can have one hell of a dress for the special occasion.
Vintage dresses were made mostly of silk, but sometimes they are too old to be worn as the lace might have been ripped and torn and beads must have got loose, use the pattern study method to restore that favorite old dress of your grandmother or great grandmothers.
The amount of work required to remake a vintage dress depends on the era of the dress. Dresses of the 1900s up to 1930s were very detailed; many components were used in designing and tailoring the finished pieces. Dresses from this era are very difficult to reproduce.
Dress Study:-
First thing the seamstress has to study the fabric and decide with what kind of fabric it can be replaced with, or replace it with a similar one if available.
Study the design of the dress, the old vintage dresses was known for its patterns and designs, references can be taken from various sites available on the internet.
Basic Work:-
Make notes and diagrams, take measurements where needed, take pictures of the dress so that you can have the exact design and pattern. The photos should be detailed, so that they can be referred whenever required.
Tag each component with an alphabet and make detailed note of the same.
Picking the piece apart:-
The pieces should be pressed rather than washed, do not wash vintage dress as you may spoil the design or pattern.
Each piece of the vintage dress should be used by the seamstress to cut the pieces laying the dress flat.
Make all the measurements to work on lace, wool or silk; do not forget to measure the underskirts or lining.
Fabric Replacement:-
Try to use everything from the vintage dress, there maybe a possibility that only bead work needs to be done or the collar of the dress may need a wash.
It is difficult to find the exact vintage fabric materials, so a little mix and match can be done using the right designs and patterns from the vintage dresses.
Cutting:-
Cut the pieces of the vintage dress that can be used in making a new dress with the same design.
Use the cut pieces from the vintage dresses and pin it up on the new fabric and tag them, so that when stitching these there should be no confusion.
Sew:-
Use all the pictures and notes that you had taken earlier of the worn out vintage dress, place the original cut outs at required places and start sewing the dress with a new fabric.
Notes and picture will be very handy in sewing the dress.
Work slowly with the important pieces as it can get complicated, it is better to work slowly than to do it wrong.
The seamstress will create a new dress by using the pieces of the old dress and this dress will be one kind of a piece in itself.
